Election Day!

This is it! Today is election day. The day when everyone will have an opportunity to voice their opinion and stake a claim in what happens over the next four years. I have been hearing that voter turnout is expected to be 64%. 64%! That is said like it is a good thing. The fact that 36% of American’s who are eligible to vote will not take part in the process today upsets me beyond words.

For those of you who fall in the 64% category, good for you! For those of you who fall in the 36% category – don’t expect to complain. I have heard people say that by not voting, it gives them the right to complain about who is in office. I don’t agree at all. If you don’t vote, you lose your right to say anything about who is in office. This includes those serving in the Senate and Congress. Heck, it includes your local Mayor.

So, if you know anyone who isn’t voting today and you are voting, tell them how you feel. Tell them what direction you think the country should be going in. Let them know your thoughts on education, health care, the war, etc. Then when they begin to talk, let them know they didn’t take part in the process. Does this sound harsh? Maybe it is. Voting isn’t a law in this country. It is right granted to us by our founding fathers. Yet if some people don’t choose to exercise that right, I don’t see why I have to listen to them complain.

I am heading out to vote now. I received a phone call from my sister letting me know she is waiting in line to vote. She never had to wait in line before. That is a good sign. Yet I have great worries about the fact that our ability to vote in this country is hampered by outdated systems, too few voting machines and other issues.

I guess that is all for now.
